The following are minutes of The Beekeepers Guild of Southeast Virginia's monthly membership meeting arranged in chronological order beginning with the most recent meeting.  Please contact Recording Secretary, Vicki Roberts, with any questions regarding the minutes.


June 2015 Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting of Beekeepers Guild of Southeast Virginia (BGSV) was called to order by President Rick Fisher on June 9th at 7:03 PM, at Towne Bank, Chesapeake, VA.

Officials present were: Rick Fisher, President; Dave Kvello, Vice President; Dennis Heidenthal, Treasurer; Bill Gregory, Mentor Coordinator; Gene Richley, Nuc Coordinator/ Scholarship Chairman; Nick Delphia, Speakers Bureau and Pam Fisher, Newsletter Editor and Webmaster.

President Rick Fisher welcomed over 66 members and 2 guests. Guild Officers were introduced. Rick reminded members to sign the attendance sheet and include any community service hours.

Officer Elections:

The slate of officers submitted by the nominating committee in May were announced as follows:

  • Dave Kvello- President
  • Bill Gregory- Vice-President
  • Laura Charles - Treasurer
  • Vicki Roberts- Recording secretary

A motion was made by Suzanne Barnes and seconded by Ernest Buzzy to accept the slate as presented. The motion was voted on and passed unanimously.

Chesapeake Beekeeping Ordinance:

Rick discussed a change to the ordinance requiring a 6-ft. barrier that is either fencing or vegetative barrier to direct the bees flight path overhead. Rick encouraged everyone to attend the City Council Meeting on June 16th, 2015 at 6:30PM. Register with the City Clerk's office at 382-6151 by 6:30pm to address council. He also encouraged everyone to reach out by email to the mayor and council with your support at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. A listing of council members and contact information was also provided as a handout.

Upcoming Events:

  • Extractaganza- July 11, 2015 at Deep Creek Ruritan Club (10AM-3PM). Please signup and provide number of supers you will be bringing and come early for setup.
  • Virginia Honey Bee Festival- August 22, 2015 at Norfolk Botanical Gardens from 10 AM to 4PM. A signup was available in the lobby and online at Signup Genius. The Theme this year is "Ban Ignorance- Not Honey Bees"

Announcements:

  • Memberships expire June 30th- check sign in sheet for year.
  • VSBA Meeting- This Friday and Saturday June 12 and 13th at Shenandoah University, Winchester Virginia.
  • XenTari wax moth control for sale- see Barbara Warren.
  • Nametags- Sign up in lobby if you need one.
  • Certified Naturally Grown Handbooks- $5 each, just a few left – see treasurer.
  • Updating Speakers Bureau- Please signup

Beekeepers Educational Session: DIY Nematode Rearing for Small Hive Beetle control presented by Pam Fisher. Chris Pering , Wendy Thomas and Kathy Tribble volunteered to head this activity for the club.

Break/Refreshments/raffle: Thanks to BettyAnne Ward for coordinating the refreshments and to everyone who brought something. 50/50 raffle- proceeds to benefit the scholarship committee.

Business Meeting:

  • A motion was made by Nick Delphia and seconded by Skip Sharp to approve the April and May minutes as submitted.
  • Dennis Heidenthal presented the Treasurer's report. The General fund total is $9,158.75 and the Scholarship fund total is $3,127.25 for a grand total of $12,286.00.
  • Audit Committee of Charity Mack, Rick Kennerly and Will Walker was identified to complete this year's financial audit and report their findings at the August meeting.
  • A motion was made by Bob Barnes to allow $725 for upgrade of the club website. This was seconded by Gary Whitford and passed unanimously. .
  • A funding request was made for Sponsorship of the Deep Creek Ruritan Club's (Guild Community Partner) Beefest in the amount of $250. Approved. (Gary Whitford/ Skip Sharp).
  • A funding request for up to $700 to purchase a laptop and necessary software was made by Skip Sharp, seconded by Suzanne Barnes and passed unanimously.
  • Mentor program overview was given by Bill Gregory and he announced that Ernest Buzzy has agreed to be the new mentor coordinator.
  • Gene Richley updated the Nuc program. The nuc List stands at 79 still waiting. 16 deeps and 53 mediums.
  • Next Board of Directors meeting: July 9, 2015 at the Ag Trailer. Members welcome.

Open forum:  The meeting closed out with what's happening in your hives. Members discussed swarms, new queens, and other problems in the hives.

Next Meeting: No July Meeting- Extractaganza! At 10 AM on Saturday, July 11, 2015 inside the Deep Creek Ruritan Club, 200 Luray Ave., Chesapeake, Virginia 23323. Potluck lunch- please sign up.!!

May 2015 Meeting Minutes

Chesapeake Beekeeping Ordinance

  • Planning Commission Meeting– Wednesday, May 13th at 7:00 PM in City Council Chambers. Please fill out the card to speak by 6:45 PM, the day of the meeting.
  • City Council Meeting – Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 6:30 PM. Register with the city Clerk's office at 382-6151 by 6:30 PM, the day of the meeting to address the council.

Thank you to members who attended the past planning commission meeting; please attend the upcoming meeting on Wednesday to support Chesapeake beekeepers.

  • Holiday Social – Monday, December 14, 2015. Buzzy volunteered to assist with finding a location for the holiday social.

  • Bee Aware, Not Afraid – Alanna Miller http://alannas-millerisa.weebly.com/  Alanna presented the club $100 that she collected during a recent event she planned and executed. She also discussed the research she has been doing and the paper she wrote for her Senior project concerning bees and their impact on the environment.
  • Group Queen Order – Queens should arrive Wednesday, May 13th. Please pick up at the Planning Commission meeting from 5 to 7 PM.

Beekeepers Educational Session: Integrated Pest Management for Varroa Control. Presented by Keith Tignor, Virginia State Apiarist

Nominating Committee Report – Julie Tye presented the Nominating Committee recommendations for all open positions; the recommendations are: President, Dave Kvello; Vice President, Bill Gregory; Treasurer, Laura Charles; and Recording Secretary, Vicki Roberts.

Break/refreshments/raffle: Thanks to Betty Ann Ward for coordinating the refreshments and to everyone that brought something to share. 50/50 Raffle: proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.

Business Meeting:

  • Rick Fisher recognized the volunteers for Chesapeake Master Gardener Plant sale and Gosport Art Festival.
  • Dennis Heidenthal presented the Treasurer's report. The General fund total is $6,635.05 and the Scholarship fund total is $3,127.25 for a grand total of $9,762.25
  • Bill Gregory provided new members and visitors a mentor program overview. The next Board Meeting is on June 4, 2015, members are welcome to attend.

Open Forum: What's happening in your hives: The meeting closed out with members discussing making successful early spring splits, swarms and feral bees.

The next meeting is scheduled for June 8, 2015, at 7 PM at Towne Hall, left wing of the Towne Bank located at 137 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Chesapeake, Va. 23322.


 

April 2015 Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting of Beekeepers Guild of Southeast Virgina (BGSV) was called to order by Vice President Dave Kvello on the second Monday of the month at 7:03 PM, at Towne Bank, Chesapeake, Va.

Rick and Pam Fisher were absent due to a pending emergency. Officials present were: Dave Kvello, Vice President, Dennis Heidenthal, Treasurer, Bill Gregory, Mentor Coordinator, Nick Delphia, Speakers Bureau and Tom Poole Recording Secretary.

Vice President Dave Kvello welcomed over 67 members and 10 guests. Guild Officers were introduced. Dave reminded members to sign the attendance sheet and include any community service hours.

Chesapeake Beekeeping Ordinance
Planning Commission Meeting– Wednesday, May 13th at 7:00 PM in City Council Chambers. Thank you to members who attended the past meeting, please attend this upcoming meeting to support the Guild.

  • Chesapeake Master Gardener Plant Sale – Friday, April 24th (7:30 AM to 6 PM) & Saturday, April 25th (8:30 AM to Noon) Please sign up on line.

Announcements:

  • Bill Gregory – spoke about Beekeeping in Chesapeake and the upcoming meeting with the Planning Commission concerning the proposed ordinance. He also talked about the need for more mentors, and asked for everyone to step up to the challenge to help new beekeepers.
  • Andy Westrich – talked about the woodenware that he sells and that he is also a distributor for Dadant products.

Beekeepers Educational Session: Dave Kvello spoke about the Guild, and the enormous amount of work that Pam and Rick do for the Guild. He also talked about some changes that need to be made, and that more members need to step up and help out with events and with positions in the Guild. Dave talked about possibly dividing up the work that the Treasurer currently does into multiple positions to ease the load on Dennis, and also splitting out some of the work that Pam does, so that one person isn't so overloaded.

Business Meeting:

  • Recognize the volunteers for Hoffler Creek, Gathering of the Guilds, Western Branch Primary.
  • A motion was made by Bill Gregory and Suzie Barnes to approve the March minutes.
  • Dennis Heidenthal presented the Treasurer's report. The General fund total is $6,233.91 and the Scholarship fund total is $3,087.25 for a grand total of $9,321.16
  • Bill Gregory provided new members and visitors a mentorship program overview. Dave mentioned since no one from Portsmouth had responded to the scholarship, the information was sent to Suffolk for this year's selection.

The next Board Meeting is on May 7, 2015 at the Ag, trailer; members are welcome to attend.

  • Gene Richley mentioned that 91 people have signed up for nucs. He also discussed the scholarship program and that Portsmouth is the city for this year's selection.

February 2015 Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting of Beekeepers Guild of Southeast Virgina (BGSV) was called to order by President Rick Fisher on the second Monday of the month at 7:01 PM, at Towne Bank, Chesapeake, VA.

Officials present were: Rick Fisher, President; Dennis Heidenthal, Treasurer; Tom Poole Recording Secretary; Bill Gregory, Mentor Coordinator; Gene Richley, Nuc Coordinator; and Pam Fisher, Webmaster & Newsletter Editor.

President Rick Fisher welcomed over 86 members and 4 guests.

Guild Officers were introduced.

Rick introduced Debbie Ritter from the Chesapeake City Council, Adam Perry, Chesapeake Planning Commission, and Tom Freeman from the Chesapeake Agriculture Advisory Commission.

Mrs. Ritter spoke about the proposed Chesapeake residential beekeeping ordinance and what it currently contains. She provided information on the process of addressing the Planning Commission and City Council. Mr. Perry spoke next and outlined the duties of the Planning Commission. Mr. Freeman of the Chesapeake Agriculture Advisory Commission spoke and also made some suggestions on how to approach this issue. Mr. Jerry Borger of the New River Valley Beekeepers Association, our speaker for the evening, provided a copy of the beekeeping ordinance proposed in his locality, Montgomery County, for our use. He also made several suggestions in regard to the ordinance issue.

Beekeepers Educational Session: Hobbyist Queen-rearing Using Double Screens. Presented by Jerry Borger of the New River Valley Beekeepers Association

Business Meeting:

  • VA Flower & Garden Expo – went very well. Rick thanked those that participated, and those that brought displays for the event.
  • A motion was made by Ernest Buzzy and Bill Gregory to approve the January minutes. Dennis Heidenthal presented the Treasurer's report. The General fund total is $7,088.86 and the Scholarship fund total is $2,127.25 for a grand total of $9,216.11
  • Bill Gregory provided new members and visitors with a mentor program overview.
  • Gene Richley mentioned that 33 people signed up for nucs. He also discussed the scholarship program and that Portsmouth is the city for this year's award.
  • The next Board Meeting is on March 5, 2015 at the Ag. Trailer; members are welcome to attend.

January 2015 Meeting Minutes

  • VA Flower Expo – Thursday to Sunday, January 29, 30, 31 & Feb 1, 2015 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The event starts at 10 AM to approx 7 PM, there will be multiple shifts. This event sells many bee friendly plants. Please sign up.
  • Beginning Beekeeping Course – Feb 14, 21 & 28, 2015 at the Virginia Wesleyan College. Registration forms are in the lobby. Please sign up to help with the refreshments and the event.

Announcements:

  • Group Hive Tool Order – If interested sign up in the lobby.
  • Group Queen Order – 39 are available for purchase.
  • Refreshment Coordinator – Betty Anne Ward volunteered to take over the position.
  • Electric Extractor Purchase - A 9 frame Maxant electric extractor was ordered and will be located at Kurt's.
  • Queen Rearing Course – Andy Westrich described the class being presented by Colonial on January 31, 2015 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Tabb Library.
  • Name tags – Sign up in lobby if you need a name tag.

  • Beekeeper of the Year – Rick Fisher presented Lanette Lepper as the Beekeeper of the Year and she was given a Brushy Mountain gift card.
  • Service Hours Recognition – Two members received gift cards in the raffle for service hours awards.
  • A motion was made by Nick Delphia and Bill Gregory to approve the November minutes.  Motion carried.
  • Dennis Heidenthal presented the Treasurer's report. The General fund total is $6,491.80 and the Scholarship fund total is $2,127.25 for a grand total of $8,619.05
  • Bill Gregory provided new members and visitors a mentor program overview.
  • Gene Richley mentioned that 28 people signed up for Nucs, 13 are from last year. He also discussed the scholarship program and that Portsmouth is the city for this year's scholarship.
