5 September 2012
The Board of Directors for the Beekeepers Guild of Southeastern Virginia met Wednesday 05 September, 2012, at 6:30 PM. Board Members present were, Pam Fisher, President; Nick Delphia, Vice President; Rick Fisher, Treasurer; Dave Kvello, Secretary; Bill Gregory, and Gene Richley.
The Following items were discussed:
The Board reviewed the August Membership meeting with Dr Mangum as a speaker. We felt the meeting went well with the invited quests, and the speaker. Dave mentioned repeating incorporating the sign up sheets in the lobby of Towne Bank to avoid distractions during the meeting.
The Honey Bee Festival was reviewed, with the following changes recommended: The Honey extraction needs to be moved to a more central location. Attendance at the presentations by Guild Speakers is not known; if poorly attended, do not include guest speakers next year.
A special events committee needs to be formed, headed by a board member to deal with larger events. Pam headed this one up on her own, and needed help dealing with the NBG board. Bill and Pam will work out checklists and guidelines for the committee before presenting the concept to the guild. This will hopefully cut down on the amount of stress placed on one person for large events.
NBG would like to add another Beginning Beekeepers Course this spring. The Board feels this would detract from our spring classes. We will approach NBG (Pam) about possibly holding our course there in the spring, if the financial arrangements can be made. The spring course is a large part of our discretionary funding for the year.
The spring short course was discussed as to any improvements from last year; the board was happy with the format and plans to copy it for next year’s class.
Gene has made the arraignments for the Holiday Social, Dec 10th at Lillian’s in place of the December meeting.
Rick gave a short update on the 501c3; we appear to have tentative approval and should have final approval soon.
Rick has finalized insurance for the Guild, we now have a general liability policy.
The following upcoming events were discussed, Fall Gardening Festival and Hampton Roads Sustainable living expo are both in need of volunteers for September. In October, there is the Waterways Heritage Festival, Ches. Farm Days (Gene) and AutumnFest (Gene/Nick).
WHRO is requesting Fund Drive helpers; we will shoot for November.
The Tidewater Builders Assoc. sent a list of events for our possible attendance. The board decided to decline, as these were not the type of events where we are likely to educate the public as attendees come to these events with a different agenda.
The Nuc program and Mentor programs were discussed with no changes at this time.
The Scholarship Committee is planning a meeting to discuss dispensing this year’s scholarship requirements.
Norfolk State University may host the VSBA meeting; other options are being pursued still, but time is running out.
A “tickler file” system for tracking important dates is being discussed and may be developed before the next officer elections.
The next Board meeting is October 4th at the Chesapeake Library.
